ABSTRACT

This paper analyses through special tabulations changes in demographic and employment features of border immigrants included in 1991 National Census of Population in Dr. Belgrano, Palpalá, Ledesma, El Carmen and San Pedro departments (which gathered at that time 88.8% of immigrants living in Jujuy).

The article compares the evolution of migration proceeding from border countries in the five departments mentioned above and the changes that Bolivian immigration went through in a national level. The paper also shows that the most important changes during the second half of the 20th century and the last were ageing and feminization.

The paper studies male and female border immigrants behaviour in the labour market, and the characteristics of their jobs according to branch of activity, labour qualifications and occupational category in 1991.
